CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Since Polly had parked in front of the sheriff’s building, she wasn’t surprised when Tab Hudson drove up beside her. Tab beckoned for her to follow, so Polly drove around the building to the back lot. Tab would take them inside herself. When they got out of the car, Tab walked over to Shelly and said, “I’m sorry that your friend is dead.”

“You’re sure it was Ricky?” Shelly asked.

“Yes, we should have put it together sooner. The two files should have interconnected for us, but they didn’t. Sometimes technology works; sometimes it doesn’t. Would you mind taking a few minutes to speak with me about him?”

“Ricky and I haven’t talked to each other since the trial,” Shelly said. “I didn’t even know he was in town. Last I heard, he was in Des Moines. Lisa went there, too.”

Tab nodded and started toward the door. “Come on in. We’ll talk. The time it will take is up to you. As long as you want to be here, I have time. Otherwise, you tell me when you’re ready to be finished.”

“He didn’t talk much about anyone else in his life,” Shelly said. Tears filled her eyes. “He was always scared. He’d been hurt so many times.”

“I’m sorry,” Tab said as she touched Shelly’s forearm. “No one should have to go through what you all did. I’d give anything to stop that type of thing before it happened. Most of us would.” She held the door open. “Down the hall. Sheriff Merritt’s door is open. I know he’d like to see you. You’re one of the happy stories in his life. You know he has a picture of you and your Dad on his bookshelf.”

“I remember that picture,” Shelly said with a smile. “Dad and I had come back from vacation out west. Sheriff Merritt called Dad and wanted to come over to make sure he was doing okay.”

“He is happy for you, Shelly,” Tab said. She stopped before getting to his door. “Please, please, please, Polly.”

“What?”

“Please say hello to Kellar.”

Shelly giggled. “You guys are mean.”

“You told her?” Tab asked.

“A little.”

“He’s gotta be here. Please?”

Polly nodded and they stopped in Aaron’s door. “Hey, Boss,” she said.

He looked up and jumped out of his seat. “Polly Giller. What are you doing here?”

Shelly stepped into view. “She brought me, Sheriff Merritt.”

“Shelly. It’s good to see you. Why are you visiting?”

“Richard Vernon,” Tab said. “They were friends.”

Aaron’s face fell. “I didn’t realize.” Frowning, he looked at Tab. “Why didn’t we realize?”

“It was a big miss, Boss. I’ll talk to Anita.”

“We should have known that.”

“Right. I’ll ask. Shelly is willing to let me ask her questions to see if we can come up with more information on him.”

“I told Deputy Hudson that I don’t know much,” Shelly said. “It’s been a long time since I knew Ricky.”

“Any information you have will help,” Aaron said.

Tab leaned in and said under her breath. “Polly’s going to say hello to Kellar.”

“She is, is she?” Aaron asked. “Isn’t that nice of her.
